Elevating Advocacy Skills to Advance Rights & Ensure Justice
The next workshop hosted by the Athletes Network for Safer Sports will provide a space to exchange knowledge and experiences in advocacy efforts on ending abuse both within and outside of sport. The goal is to support people impacted by abuse in sports who want to improve their skills in advocating for accountability, remedy, prevention and policy change.
Survivor-advocates are people with lived experience of abuse who engage – whether individually or as part of a group – in efforts to protect and advance the rights and wellbeing of others in various areas of life and work such as sports, the military, the church or other religious environments. Survivor-advocates play a critical role in holding people in power accountable, improving preventive policies and enabling access to justice and remedy for themselves and their peers.
However, there is often a cost involved. Survivor-advocates may face opposition from the status quo in their respective endeavors, including threats, harassment, defamation, and restrictions on freedom of expression, among other challenges. In this workshop, panelists will share experiences, strategies, tips and opportunities in order to foster learning and knowledge-sharing among people impacted by abuse in sport.
