Kickoff for a discussion on the human rights risks of the Women’s European Championship in Switzerland and on the responsibility of sports associations. Event co-organized by Amnesty International Switzerland and the Sport and Rights Alliance.

Wednesday, 18 September 2024 18:30 – 21:00 | Spittelsaal, Bern House of Generations

The European Women’s Football Championship will be held in Switzerland for the first time in July 2025. This major sporting event is a unique opportunity to raise the profile of women’s football, promote it appropriately and take bold action against discrimination. With less than ten months to go before kick-off, it is high time to initiate a discussion about the human rights risks of hosting a major sporting event, and the challenges for women’s football in particular. We will discuss opportunities, risks and measures with affected players and fans, representatives of the Swiss Football Association, and politicians as well as experts from the Sport and Rights Alliance. A standing drinks reception will be offered following the discussion.

Speakers

Moderation: Lisa Salza, Head of Sports and Human Rights , Amnesty International Switzerland, with a greeting from Alexandra Karle, Executive Director of Amnesty International Switzerland

The event will be held in German. Whispered translation available in English.

Sport has the potential to be a catalyst for human development, unity, and freedom, but too often it instead brings harm to its athletes, fans, and communities. We exist to uncover and rectify the many abuses that exist both in and around sport. We aim to transform sports into an authentic force for good.
